John Mulholland's run's the Cheltenham preview night every year to raise money for Barney Curley's charity DAFA. This year we teamed up with the Racing Post for another fantastic year. Here's some of the highlights and some interviews behind the scenes

The Cheltenham festival is fast approaching and I hope to update this blog throughout with the money horses, my own tips(don't laugh) and whats happening in John Mulholland shops.

Where I state 1pt, this implies I recommend you have 1 unit of your usual bet. If that's a €1, fiver, a tenner, €20, €1000, that's your business.

Six Nations 2012

A mild winter comes to an end and spring breakes into a siberian winter so we know the Welsh will be fine after all their ice training in their Polish gulag.Last year I correctly predicted England would prevail so here's hoping lighting strikes twice.

Ireland-Verdict: 1st

How will Ireland cope without our greatest player? Would we have beaten France in 2007 and so won the Grand Slam if Brian was fit. Would we have won against England in 2008 in our only defeat since 2003 if Brian was fit? Both times the likely answer is yes and it will be impossible to really replace him.

The difference there and here was he got injured when we were expecting him to play. Ireland has had months to adjust to life after Brian and the provinces have been electric including O Driscoll’s Leinster. Of course we would be better with but we can win and Declan is obviously more keen to win this Six Nations than blood new players. With IRB rankings in a World Cup draw year and the Lions job to be decided, anything less than a Six Nations title would be a failure

We’ll know our fate inside 2 weeks but we’re meeting Wales at the perfect time and even a defeat to France may see us collect the title as I expect France to lose later in the tournament.
9/2 is too generous to turn down

France-Verdict: 2nd

The Liermont era is over and France are again the side to beat after losing unluckily to New Zealand in the final. They have England and Ireland in the Stade de France and looking at their 22 shows what depth they have to have players like Parra, I Harinordoquy & M Mermoz on the bench. It is their tournament to lose and hopefully they'll do just that. I cannot see them beating Wales though on the final day even if they are coming to win a Grand Slam

Wales-Verdict:3rd

After watching this youthful side destroy Ireland and look to have the better of France in the semi finals, they immediately went to the top of the market for this seasons Six Nations however no cryotherapy chamber can hide the fact Wales are battered and bruised going into this campaign. The likelihood is the bodies feel like the year is in May rather than February and injuries to key positions could cost Wales for the first 3 matches. Ireland are meeting them at the perfect time and even if Jamie Roberts gets on the field on Sunday, I refuse to believeit will be at full fitness and he was vital in their world cup win. Priestland , Lydiate & Rees also injured and Shane Williams retired, it’s hard to see them winning at the Aviva. Win however and they will be favourites and by the time France roll into town, they’ll be near full strength again

Scotland-Verdict: 4th

I have always rated Scotland higher than most and I can see them winning against England in Murrayfield and running Wales close the following week but they don’t score tries and that doesn’t look like changing until Tim Visser gains nationality in the summer. Two wins would be a good campaign

Italy-Verdict: 5th

Italy are promising big things and have moved their home against England to the Stadio Olimpico and will be the biggest attended game ever ni Italy. Last season they defeated France and should have defeated Ireland and I can see them in with a real chance of winning both home games this campaign. Scotland will be seen as the most likely but England could find themselves bottom of the pile after two supposed easy matches

England-Verdict: 6th

Let me say of course it’s a longshot to back England for the wooden spoon but fortune favours the brave and at 12/1, it’s worth a nibble. England could be anything and they need this Six Nations with no expectation or pressure for a new line of players to find their feet. Their backline has explosive talent in players like Christ Ashton and Ben Foden but I don’t consume much Sky hype and one team for 8 in the Heineken cup quarter finals shows the strength of English rugby right now

Rugby World Cup Preview 2011

It's time for the Rugby World Cup down in New Zealand and with the matches on so early it should be sponsored by Kelloggs. Not great news for us bookmakers as our shops will be still closed when most matches are under way but John Mulholland has cooked up the best offer in either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere with our cashback offer for the group stages.

And with the precision of rugby handicap markets, you can be sure of a few landing dead on the bullseye. Of course backers of the handicap tie itself can still do so. Thats the marketing spiel out of the way so onto how to make money from the tournament.

Optimism is thin on the ground in Ireland after a few lacklustre tests against Scotland ,France and England but there are reasons to be optimistic and the greatest route to profit in betting is to go against the crowd when the prices are in your favour.

5 Reasons why Ireland can do better than expected in this World Cup

1. Although victory was not obtained, I was hugely impressed in the Scotland game by the defensive stand Ireland put up to Scotland. Only a late try when Ireland had made a raft of changes won the day for Scotland in a game they played a first side against an experimental Irish side. Scotland are no mugs and that was stronger form than most will give credit.

2. The first game especially in France, Ireland showed they are in such a better place versus 2007 warm up. These players needed to get upto match speed and were one or two loose passes away from victory. It's much better to be making those mistakes now than even against USA in match one. Donnacha O Callaghan stated they were holding back and while some will scoff, the player will not peak in 4 warm up matches, they won't even peak in USA match, they need to peak against either Australia or Italy.

3. The exclusion of Luke Fitzgerald and Thomas O Leary. It's amazing to think of two Lions players in 2009 not even making the 30 man panel two years later but their form was not there and Kidney dropped them accordingly. That is the signs of gutsy coach and there is no way in hell Eddie O Sullivan would have made that call. Peter Stringer & John Hayes would still be in his squad.

4. They are a really talented bunch. Stating the obvious? Well some have already forgotten the heights of 2009. Ferris is a risk and he may never play as good as that season but when you see a backline of Sean O Brien and Jamie Heaslip at full capacity which I believe they will reach come the match against Italy, the makings of a team to get to a semi final is there. I won't be disappointed if they don't beat Australia as long as they dont lose any more to injury. They need to have two big performances in this World Cup and the Australia match is not one of them. Peak against Italy and peak in quarter final against perhaps South Africa and this Irish side will have progressed further than any other Irish side.

5. The Curse of Tv3. Hallelujah that we will not have to see Matt Cooper's mug this year. Don't ask me to explain it but we all know once the national side of either soccer or rugby are televised on TV3, it all goes to pot. RWC 2007 was horrendous and the 5-2 defeat to Cyprus in the football proves the curse is real. Thankfully we'll be subjected to Brent and Hookey for the duration of the tournament.

We have already seen a few large wagers in John Mulholland at odds on. One punter got involved a few months ago at 8/11 for €11,000 and we are braced for plenty more money buyers at 4/6. They are deserved favourites but on home soil the pressure will be enormous and they have to prove they can handle that. It's probably a good thing France is in their group as they have not beaten France in the group stages since the inaugural win in 1987 in the final. This way, they won't meet France again until the final if both progress that far.

For my money, I'd rather get involved in Australia. They are second best in the world but they wear the T-Shirt of pressure much better. They're brand of rugby is exciting and while defeats to Samoa and England may scare some, their first XV is the biggest match to New Zealand. Backing them at 10/11 to reach the final rather than 4/6 New Zealand is a much better bet in my humble opinion. I'd also have a smaller wager on them to win the whole thing. Pressure will be immense on New Zealand and if it goes to plan, Australia's route to the final of Wales-England is an easier route than New Zeland's Scotland-South Africa.

Ireland play USA on the 10th anniversary of September the 11th. Throw in the fact Eddie O Sullivan in in the opposite dugout and the gods could point to an upset for Eddies Eagles. In Truth it's hard to make a case for backing USA on a handicap of even 36+ points. USA have not shown any form which suggests they could get close. USA scared England in 2007 and even though emotions will run high, I cannot make a case for a shock.

Ireland will see beating Australia as a a safe route to the semi finals. They won't win however but will run them close again. Italy will be the decider and don't forget Italy should have beaten Ireland in the six nations before beating France. They haven't picked up the baton this summer though with a lacklustre victory over Japan to their name. Ireland will be ready to front up by the final match and will overcome their first important test where they will expect to meet either Wales, Samoa or South Africa in the quarter finals. I will make a case for why it may not be South Africa but even if it is, this South Africa side have gone backwards since 2007 and Ireland are ideally suited to beating them. Man for man and contrast of styles could see us prevail and reach our first Semi final.

Here's a mad outsider bet. South Africa to fail to reach the 1/4 finals. They are in the group of death with Wales and Samoa and many are thinking that Wales could get caught out again by a pacific islander team. It very well could happen and Samoa could have a huge World Cup having shocked Australia this season. Where it could go wrong for South Africa is the style of play of both Wales and Samoa and the way the fixtures fall. Meeting Wales first up causes problems because whoever loses this match is suddenly in danger of elimination. Wales will run at South Africa all day and gaps will open up. South Africa have regressed under Peter De Villies and his decision to wrap the first XV in cotton wool for most of the Tri Nations could blow up in his face. He over trained them last season and now he could have under trained them this season. South Africa won in 2007 but only after a scare in the quarters to Fiji and while they should still have enough for both Samoa & Wales 50/1 is worth the risk to find out

Galway Races 2011

Here we go again for another 7 day war between punters and the bookies. John Mulholland and co will be seen as the mortal enemy of the all that inhibit Galway for the week but bear in mind that despite the fact trade should still be huge throughout the next 7 days, we could lose our proverbials just as much as the punter. In fact, the only gang certain to pull in the money this week is the publican but I never hear anybody call them a shower of s....

Onto the racing and this years big two races look like very hot renewals. The Galway Hurdle is now worth a quarter or a million and is the biggest handicap hurdle in Europe. Overturn is doubtful as I write this and The Real Article is going in the dock for apparently non trying last time. Well not the horse himself, though that would be a sight to see. Captain Cee Bee may choose the Hurdle over the Plate and lets not forget this guy won a Supreme Novice Hurdle while no doubt the Galway public will latch onto either of Elliot's Dirar or Plan A.

The Plate could have a big English presence about it with David Pipe(Quilton) and Paul Nicholls (Rebel Du Marquis) crossing the water. The one I like at a price would be a winner last season at the festival Invisible Man but then if Bahrain Storm gets in, he could be thrown in at those weights.

The British Open 2011

With Tiger Woods becoming the first American to skip Sandwich this week is all about one man, Rory McIlroy. Winning his first major by the lowest card ever shot at the US Open it's now all a case of Tiger who as we welcome the arrival of a new golfing superstar.

Is he a banker or a blowout?

Well he has only won 3 tournaments while Tiger had 30 under his belt at this stage. He had yet to show he can handle a Sunday in the frame with golfers breathing down his neck. He now has to cope with the favourite tag as well.

On the plus side, he has the best golf swing in the world, is the best links player and has lead in each of the last 4 majors and in truth would have won last season's British Open only for the freak weather on Friday that he endured while winner Oosthuzien escaped. He has shown such resilance to cope with his Augusta meltdown in the very next tournament and the likelyhood is no such meltdown should transpire again.

Hype is a horrid thing for bettors to gauge as it usually means we have to take shorter prices about horses, golfers, football teams etc based not on what they have shown but on what they "could" show. As I said, Rory was never in danger in the US Open. He led by 8 shots on Sunday while a 4 shot lead at Augusta wasn't that big a buffer once he bogeyed the first and Charl Schwartzel birdied it and in Malaysia the week after he again had amble opportunity to win but fell short in the closing stages. His other big win was in Quail Hollow where he won with a Sunday 62 winning from a position of no pressure.

Will Rory handle the pressure if he is around the front of the pack with no buffer on Sunday. Is a single figure price any value.?

Well at 8/1 right now I'd say he is value right now with 7 places out there. If he is one shot ahead on Sunday and is 4/6, then I'd consider that a bad price but of course he might just blitz the field again.

Right now he's a bet and I'm more inclined to side with him over any other player in the top 6 in the betting. Luke Donald may have won the Scottish Open but after backing him for the US Open I'm deserting him this time.

Who else can win?
Oh about 80 other players and lets not forget 400-1 outsider Ben Curtis won this in 2003 having never played a links course before so expect surprises. Anthony Kim is again a huge price and could go close at a huge price. When did you ever see Phil Mickelson go off 45-1 for any tournament. His closest form in the Open was in 2004 when he was playing super human but all the same he looks overpriced. Charl Schwartzel is starting to look like another specialist and again looks way overpriced at 55/1.Both Sergio and Padraig are starting to show form and could enter calculations this week as well but right now I'd advise one and only bet.

Last chance to watch Galway in the championship

Will both Galway sides be on their summer holidays in the second week of July?

I for one try to avoid tipping in hurling as haling from Donegal, the only reason we used hurls was to beat northern's back over the border on a bank holiday weekend. Galway were horrendous against Dublin and somewhat sublime against Clare but in truth their actual form lies somewhere in between. They are still the only side that can trouble Kilkenny and Tipperary but that's not to say they'll overcome the Rebels. Cork's confidence will no doubt be buzzing after beating Laois 10-20 but that Laois side are on a par with my own beloved Donegal in the hurling stakes and Galway and I truly hope they emerge victorious. I just won't be backing them.

In the football however it's a different story. I find it hard to envisage a Galway win. Their collapse against Mayo was painful to watch and no doubt our own boss Alan Mulholland suffered twice with Paul Conroy winning the punters all their money back. I have spoken to Alan and he;s quietly optimistic. He'd never come out and say as much but if we factor in the large gap between league and first championship match, excuses can be made for rustiness by Galway. I'd go along with that myself if it were not for the fact Galway started well, pushed on till half time and then just collapsed.

Meath look in the second tier ready to challenge any of the big guns on their day and as long as complacency doesn't creep in, it's hard to see Galway catching them out.

Verdict: Meath 4/9

Bet of the weekend price is drying up fast. I tipped up London to beat Fermanagh at 5/2 two weeks ago and expected to see them short odds to take care of Waterford. An initial price up at 11/10 had me salivating but that didn't last long and now London are into 4/6. Still a decent price and they should be put in all your weekend doubles, trebles etc.

Verdict: London 4/6

Kildare were robbed against Dublin but again John looked after the punters and as long as they don't go down the Louth route of feeling sorry for themselves, they'll account for Laois with the minimum of fuss. Laois are a decent side having reached the division 2 final but Kildare are probably the 4th best team in the country right now and McGeeney will have the troops fired up

Verdict:Kildare 2/5

Tyrone, Armagh, Down, Aintrim and Dublin are all heavily odds on to win this weekend and of the five perhaps Aintrim could be the only squeaky one capable of an upset by Carlow but at 9/2 doesn't greatly appeal. Down barely got past Clare and on the handicaps I'd look to side with Longford to keep it close against Tyrone.

We've been starving most weeks with only Armagh v Derry last week and very few high profile battles so far in the championship year but it all explodes into life this weekend with 4 provincial semi finals and 8 1st round qualifiers.

13:30 London vs Fermanagh
Our twelve match feast begins in Ruislip with London taking on Fermanagh. One naive bookmaker chalked up an initial 11/2 on London and will hoping against any surpises here. Fermanagh were hopeless against Derry while London put it up to a hopeless Mayo team losing narrowly in extra time. Fermanagh may have won the league match by 6 point in April but London have since drafted in more players and can cause the first big shock of the weekend.The Exiles have not won in the championship for 34 years but stat could be dead by Saturday afternoon.
Verdict :London

14:00 Antrim vs Westmeath
A very open match on paper and I must admit Wexford's annihilation of Westmeath caught me by surprise and manager Pat Flanagan has perhaps hit the panic button by calling in a raft of u-21 players. Aintrim haven't kicked a ball since that defeat to Donegal. They have a nice double header to boost the attendance with the hurling against Carlow on afterwards and the 4/5 may not last before Saturday. I see Aintrim winning by 3 or more.

15:00 Clare vs Down
Danny Hughes has been ruled out for Down but that should pose no problems and this is just the tie Down would of wanted to build up confidence after that defeat by Armagh. The spread looks about right as I see them winning by 6 or 7 points without coming off the bridle.

17:00 Cavan vs Longford
Home advantage once again for Cavan but will it bear as little fruit as last time. Many of Cavan's players made their championship debuts against Donegal and perhaps with a quick enough turnaround they'll catch up to the pace here. Longford go into this as favourites based on their unlucky defeat to Laois and Division 4 title and this match has a derby element. Cavan have a few injury doubts including their up and coming star Fergal Flanagan and if he misses out Longford look the bet.
Verdict: Longford

19:00 Louth vs Meath
The Televised game on Saturday and Meath have been in purgatory since that "goal" in last season's Leinster final. They need to throw this game to Louth just to repent to our Lord for stealing that title off poor little Louth. Carlow's win for me was the biggest shock of the championship; Much more so than Leitrim beating Sligo i.e I backed Leitrim and I backedLouth. To lose to Carlow is like Andy Roddick getting caught out by Conor Niland and I wonder can they come back from it so soon. This hype and grudge factor has been overblown and the prices should be closer to Meath 2/7 and Louth 3/1. For that reason Meath have to be the bet and don't forget this match is in Breffni park not in Louth.

17:00 Wicklow vs Sligo
Sligo have had to wait a long time to get over that Leitrim defeat and lose here and it's off on holidays already. They can delay the booking for one more week though as they should have enough to get it done here.

19:00 Offaly vs Monaghan
This is the first time they have met in the championship and its really a game I'd leave alone from a punting point of play. |Monghan looked good in stages aganist Tyrone and while many big hitters will be licking their lips at 4/9 I'd like to see more of this new look side before diving in.

19:00 Laois vs Tipperary
Tipp won this last year by a solitary point but home advantage sees Laois go off a prohibitive 4/11 and while should win the handicap of -3 doesn't appeal hugely.

14:00 Carlow vs Wexford
The only non televised game on the Sunday and I think we'll leave it parked and move onto the big match in Connacht.

14:00 Mayo vs Galway
This may only be the semi final stage but both sides will be treating it like their cup final. Its highly unlikely either side will be challenging in September and in fact most sides from Down, Armagh, Meath, and the losers from Dublin-Kildare and Donegal-Tyrone will be more than happy to go through either of these sides in the qualifers. Mayo were abyssal against London and many believe that shock will have awaken the Westerners for their great rivals. Mayo won easily in the league campaign and have won the last two meetings in Castlebar in the championship but for the life of me I cannot get past a Galway win here. These matches are always notoriously close and the canny punter will side with either side winning the match by 1-3 points at around 10/11 but I'll be greedy and go straight in for the odds against Galway too.

16:00 Dublin vs Kildare
Once the western battle is over, we turn our attention to Croke Park for Dublin v Kildare and I cannot wait for this one. Kildare have done it all so easy so far while Dublin have yet to catch light. Dublin's implosion against Cork in the league final will not escape my cranium. It would once again be no harm to Dublin if the lost here as a final against Wexford will not have them hitting the ground running in the 1/4 final stages. At the prices I can see Kildare winning against Dublin for the first time since 2000 in the championship and I'll look to back them in the handicap market just to play it safe.
Verdict: Kildare +2

15:30 Donegal vs Tyrone
In 2007 Donegal was on a high; league champions, then then beat their bogey side Armagh in the first round. They came to meet Tyrone in a Ulster Semi final with serious hope of winning their first title since 1992 but came crashing back to earth with an 11 point hammering. Confidence once again is rising in the hills and the market has been backing Donegal throughout. Tyrone didn't pull away from Monaghan by any stretch but I don't buy this new Donegal puke football tag. Only Cork know how to blow Tyrone away and that's by having men over 6 foot running all over them from deep. Donegal have never been known for height and even with a nastier streak they'll struggle to overcome Mickey Harte's me especially if Michael Murphy loses the appeal.
Verdict: Tyrone

7 Places you say- US OPEN 2011

So John Mulholland is going Seven Heaven. This preview is written by Kevin, that means my selection with come Eleven..th. Doesn't really work. This season the US Open is staged at the Congressional, last chosen as the venue back in 1997 and won by South African Ernie Els and the course also stages the A T&T national so perhaps that could be used as a guage to determining the victor. The tournament is only 4 years old with Justin Rose, Tiger Woods, Anthony Kim and KJ Choi winning this invitational.

The At&T is an invitational hosted by Tiger Woods and current joint fav and Tiger's best bud Phil Mickelson has only played it once back in 2007 and missed the cut. How will he fare this time. One win and one second this season but a poor Masters at Augusta, Mickelson has left 3 and arguably 4 US Open's behind him and it's hard to get excited about his chances at the odds.

One man that absolutely loves it around here is Anthony Kim. He won it in 2008 and should have followed up in 2009 only for a weak 71 finish on Sunday. He missed last season through injury but his form this season is diabolical with not one top 5 finish for a golfer of his calibre. His best finish since a missed cut at Augusta is tied 56th. Horses for courses though, eh and at 100/1 with 7 places I think you could get a great run for your money.

New Zealander Michael Campbell was 200/1 in 2005 while Lucas Glover was 100/1 in 2009 and only for a superhuman effort by Tiger Woods, Rocco Mediate would have walked away with the spoils at another huge price in 2008 so don't be afraid of the triple figured prices.

Anybody who likes fairytales will remember Michael Campbell, Ben Curtis or the Wild Thing's late subsitition into the Major will be backing Jason Dufner. He has snuck in after Anders Hansen withdrew and his form has been rock solid with top 10 finishes 3 of his last 4 tournaments including 6th in the Players. He has also finished 5 in last season's PGA championship. His approach shots are excellent and he is best on the tour for Proximity to the hole. Yes he's a longshot but again it's fairly nice to be holding a 150/1 shot docket in your hand come Sunday at a Major.

So enough longshots now, who from the front of the pack looks best placed to challenge. Betpack initially had Luke Donald priced up at 14/1 and I cannot see why he was that big. His stats this year are frightening. 4th at the Masters and Players. Winner of the BMW PGA and World Matchplay. Every tournament a top 10 finish bar his opening tournament missed cut in the Northern Trust. The only negative is lack of course form but the man has all the tools to unlock this course and at the prices looks head and shoulders above Lee Westwood, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy. I'd give chances to Martin Kaymer and Nick Watney but the best of the best is Cool Hand Luke. Kaymer doesn't suit Augusta while Watney, disappointing at Augusta has shown he one of the best Americans left to defend their Majors and will win one soon.

Cat fights and return of the Cats

Mickey Harte is a man I think the world of, he's perhaps the best manager in the game and three Tyrone All Ireland's for a team that never held the title before his arrival prove the class of the man. This year has been a particularly painful one for Mickey and one journalist close to him at this time was Brian Carthy but his actions, meditated out of loyalty to Brian look way over the top. GAA managers have no right to demand how RTE coverage of the matches is handled. I have no idea why Brian Carthy is not their anchor commentator on the RTE radio one but I don't understand why they pay planks like Pat Kenny and Ryan Tubrity those type of wages either or why they commission any TV programme starring Katherine Lynch but if RTE backtracked now and promoted Carthy surely that would be a tainted promotion now judging by the method by which it's achieved. Onto this weekend's football and hurling.

Leitrim vs Roscommon-Sunday 2:00

Leitrim's victory over Sligo shocked many but not me. Mickey Moran, another RTE shunner, has Leitrim playing well and their fitness appears higher than any season before. Their trainer,
Oliver Cummings is the trainer for Paul McCloskey so baring a stop for cuts, expect Leitrim to motor to the final whistle. Roscommon, last season's surprise champions, overcame New York easily last month but I expect they will be slow out the gate.

Cavan vs Donegal-Sunday 3:30

Donegal play one tough minded game in horrid weather against Aintrim and suddenly the whole world is calling them the Ugliest team since Don Reeves' Leeds. I think it's a tad harsh and Donegal need to block out all the media and just play their way. Michael Murphy picked up a leg infection last week but has been passed fit to start while Rory Kavanagh and Michael Hegarty are also shaking off niggles. This test looks harder than the bookies odds suggest and Cavan, with home advantage and a hole host of debutantes from their U-21 Ulster champions team could be absolutely anything. Betting wise the most appealing bet would be Cavan in receipt of a 3 point start.

Carlow vs Louth & Wexford vs Westmeath

Hard to see anything but a Louth win and will strike as the safest moneybuyer match of the weekend at 1/4 while Wexford hope to carry on the momentum of that hammering of Offaly by seeing past Westmeath with a big home crowd behind them for a double header for Wexford. I think the odds though look wrong on this occasion as Wexford will need to improve again from that match and Westmeath were excellent in Division 3 this season up to their loss to Louth.

On to the Hurling

To regular readers of this blog I won't lie to you. Follow my tips on the Gaelic football and you have a good chance of profiting. Follow my tips on the hurling and you'll end up in the potless, just like me. There is a real buzz around Wexford around this game, confidence is high that they can achieve an upset against their biggest rivals. However one caveat there is despite losing the final to Dublin, Kilkenny did still finish top of the table and while suddenly as big 7/4 to win the Liam McCarthy cup, their rivals are not 66/1 for another other reason than the gap is still huge.

Kilkenny to win by 8 or more at 10/11 to make it a weekend double header to forget for Wexford.

Fair play to the Ulster folk for coming out in numbers for Armagh v Down. It was a cracker of a match but I still believe it should have been used to open the whole championship as opposed to play second fiddle to the Champions League. What a fantastic game all the same and delighted my tip Armagh won. They are now 3/1 from 8/1 to win Ulster championship and 25/1 from 40/1 for All Ireland glory.

Tyrone vs Monaghan Sunday at 3:30

Monaghan meet Tyrone is a repeat of last season’s Ulster final. Back then Monaghan were many people’s favourites that day but were routed by a superior Tyrone outfit. That defeat signalled the end of the Seamus McEaney era and with it some of the panel decided to give in to retirement and emigration. This Monaghan side will bear little resemblance to that side and it would be a manmouth task to go to Amagh and collect the win. Tyrone could start both Brian Dooher and Stephen O Neill so it’s hard to judge where they are at presently but Tyrone deserve to be 4/11 shots and it’s hard seeing an upset here:

Meath vs Kildare Sunday 2:00

Seamus McEnaney' has moved down the road to take charge of Meath and caused great controversy with the call up of Graham Geraghty. Whether he still has the ability to do it at 38 and 3 years out of the game is not my biggest worry. It’s the effect it will have on the other Meath players. The signal is out; the manager doesn’t believe in this squad and is trying to pull rabbits from a hat. I expect Kildare to destroy Meath and make them my bet of the week.

Dublin vs Laois Sunday 2:00

Dublin play their first game since that horror collapse to Cork and it’s really anybody’s guess how they will perform. They could beat Laois out the gate or could start sluggish and nervous and Laois will be attractive on the handicap plus 5 points. I’d stay away altogether for now.

Limerick vs Kerry Saturday 6:45

One team I will be backing on the handicap is Limerick +7 even with the loss of Stephen Lucey and of John Galvin. Expect Limerick to drop in high balls under a susceptible keeper and I can see Limerick nicking two goals here to beat the spread. Kerry will look to just get the job done and wait a ridiculous 4 weeks to the Munster final.

One match many assumed was shock proof was last week’s meeting between Mayo and London. I joked at the start of the season that Galway would beat Mayo in the Semi’s IF Mayo could get passed London. They didn’t deserve to and they will amount to little in the backdoor this season. Out to 33/1 and in truth should be double that.

They are going to need a lot of luck and catch the right breaks and get those important decisions by the ref. I'm referring to Barcelona not Man Utd by the way. While the whole world cannot see any way that United can win, the maxim to profit in this game in the long run is to know when to go against the crowd and when to join the masses.

I have been unimpressed with Barcelona this season. Yes they blew Real Madrid away 5-0 but that was in October and so far in the group stages of the Champions League they have certainly got the breaks and the decisions. Arsenal had them on the ropes until the inexplicable sending off for Van Persie. Real Madrid too were holding their own until they're sending off and had a goal wrongly disallowed in the return leg that could have changed the Denmark of the match.

Barcelona have the best players in the world, no doubt. Messi is the best player of this decade, Xavi and Inesta on paper will toy with Giggs and Carrick, David Villa while not yet doing it for Barcelona has been the most exciting striker at the last two major international tournaments and scores the big goals. Where can United win? United were stuffed 2-0 in 2009 and that United team was supposedly superior and this Barcelona team is better than the 2009 version.

Well for starters, it's at Wembley, and United will have a virtual home crowd(most of their fans are apparently from London). Ferguson has out smarted every other manager this season, why not Pep as well. Barcelona have a weakness that few have managed to exploit that I can see united having a field day with. Dan Alaves is a forward pushing right back. As the team goes forward, he goes forward, TOO Forward. They also have problems down the left back spot with Abidal just back from liver tumour. Few teams have been able to exploit this bar Arsenal this season. United will have done their homework and expect every time they have the ball to attack at speed down that both flank. If United are too win this match, one man will have to be at the top of his game. Nani started the season as United's best player but has gone into the shadows as each player has taken it in turns to emerge as their star man.Berbatov, Rooney and now Hernadez have lite up the stage at different parts of the season. Nani though possesses the skills needed to unlock this Barcelona team and if they are to win, I see him as the man that will do it. He may not even start with Fergie possibly favouring Park and Valencia so perhaps wait for the team sheet to come out but if he gets the green light which I believe he should have a nibble

Value Bet: Nani to be man of the match.

Man United are around 11-4 to win the match and while some will sneer and others will think it a great price, I'd be slightly on the latter but I think I've unearthed an even better bet. United to score 2 or more goals is also 11/4. Now that means the only result of United winning and you losing would be if United won 1-0(7-1). That is an unlikely occurrence in my humble opinion and not reflective of the true odds. Yes Fergie could set his team to play 10 men behind the ball and counter but that would most likely result in his team getting cut down eventually and I cannot see United trying to hold onto a 1-0 lead for dear life.

If we remove that permutation or perhaps have a small saver on 1-0, backing United to score 2 or more at 11/4 allows us to collect on any other win, 2-2 draw or loss. If United score 2 and still lose then fair enough, Barcelona are superstars and we've still collected on our bet. Only Arsenal have scored two goals against Barcelona this season hence the big price but as Ive stated, United will attack and exploit that gap better than Arsenal can and as long as the ref doesn't start giving Barca all the decisions again, United will either win or go down in a ball of flames.

GAA-Armagh v Down

Down, All Ireland runners up come to Armagh as favourites for the first time since the early nineties. Let us not forget that no team other that Armagh or Tyrone have won the Anglo Celtic cup since 1998. Armagh have been in the doldrums but this is the season I see their reemergence. There has been talk of fallouts after their defeat to Kildare in the league but this is just the type of match to start their season and I'd take them to win the battle at the prices.

Verdict: Armagh to win at 11/8

Magner's Celtic League Final

Last week's comeback was simply a joy to watch and now Leinster go for an unprecedented double. The reason why they are so closely matched in the betting is

1. Have Leinster been on the lock since Saturday?-Possibly
2. Are Leinster too battered and bruised to go for another high intensity game?- Again yes that is possible but they have the squad to go and some don't have too much mileage on the clock
3. Munster are at home, that's a huge advantage- Home advantage in rugby seems to be bigger than any other sport but it didn't help Leinster last season at the Ospreys
4. Munster are just as good as Leinster- no chance, the gulf in class has widened with each season. Leinster won 6 in a row going into the last meeting. Munster needed that win badly, Leinster did not.

The match could go either way based on these assumptions but again at the prices I'll buy into sheer class against dour toughness. Munster needed fresh blood two seasons ago and it still hasn't emerged. They are getting better at the back but they are still just not good enough against Leinster to justify 6/5

Puke Football rears its ugly head again

So Ulster football is in the gutter again like it was related to Scottish football. Aintrim manager Liam Bradley accused Dongeal of employing blanket defence tactics despite the fact he employed the same tactic and did so two years earlier when Aintrim caused a shock in Ballybofey. That's akin to Jedward complaining Azerbaijan had no talent. Donegal won ugly but in truth how could they win any other way? The day was rotten and damp and they had to beat a blanket defence of their own.

Donegal are a bit like Galway over the years. Both have played with great flair and can prove to be two of the most exciting teams in the championship. However you never really know what you're going to get with them, will they get started and turn on the style or will they get hockeyed by 10 points plus. Should they abandon their roots and toughen up. Are they obliged to put on a show(attendance on Sunday was just over 6,000 at a 17,500 capacity).

I mentioned Scottish football where Celtic just finished a point off Rangers with a huge total of 92 points. They were cheered by the crowd and did a lap of honour. This in a city where coming second is as good as coming last. While many will want to show solidarity with Neil Lennon in this horrid time, one of the great reasons he is so loved by the fans is the style of play. Gordon Strachan won 3 titles in a row playing puke football and never endeared himself to the fans while Lennon's team is built on attack and they have been a joy to watch in the last few months as the team has begun to click and while another season of no league title next season would be deemed unacceptable, right now fans are just delighted to be entertained again with free flowing football. That is in Celtic's DNA and its also in Donegal's and Galways.

Galway's attendances in recent seasons has plummeted and it seems to be hard to get punters through the door or any sport in the city right now. Is it because they are not winning or is it because the product is no longer entertaining? Munster rugby has lost the winning touch and suddenly the 16th man has gone missing. Are fans just fickle? In large numbers yes. GAA teams can put on a show all they want but at the end of the day unless there is style to the substance no eventually the fans will turn. Arsenal fan's are now calling for Wengers head and what will happen Neil Lennon's free flowing Celtic if they allow Rangers to win a 4th title in a row?

Time for Galway to follow Donegal's lead and play a little puke football.

All Ireland Championship 2011 Preview

Here we go again. Last season Cork brought us home the bacon but just like the other big winner last summer, Spain at the World Cup, neither side did it in much style. They ground out the results in a workmanlike fashion without lighting up the championship. They should have lost to Dublin at the semi final stage and Down had them on the ropes for much of the final and it looked like the worst percentage finalists were about to add another runners up medal. They overcame their nerves and after winning last season and getting the monkey off their back so to speak, I genuinely believed with one win under their belt they could go on and win the next 3 All Ireland's. They have followed up so far by retaining their league championship so will it be a Double Double. Read on to find out

Don't leave me?

While trying to work out the winners, we punters will always look for an angle. Mine last season was Kerry were never going to replace the exodus to Australia and Tyrone were not at the races leaving the door open for Cork to take up the mantle as the best team in the country. This season I'm concerned about the exodus of all players from mostly the western counties. We're all sick to death reading about recession this, Morgan Kelly that and after 3 years drowning in all the bad times most people just want to escape and the championship is the perfect antidote as long as the GAA keep tickets affordable. pack 7 lads into a Toyota Corolla, with packed hang sandwiches and we'll be back to the good old days.

What is troubling though and must be examined from a punting view is who is losing the most players in this recession. Young men are the biggest losers in the unemployed statistics and the GAA is amateur after all. While the core of the squad have tried to hang around for a championship attempt, it's more likely that the players on the fringes will head for pasteurs new for work. A thinner pool of players to select from does two things. Injuries leave teams bare and without the fringes pushing the top squad, competition decreases and the overall quality of the county teams drops. 200 young men left Kerry in the first half of 2010 registered to play Gaelic football. Those stats will be replicated in counties like Mayo, Donegal, Sligo, Wexford and Louth.

The only teams that are likely to avoid such problems are Cork and Dublin and perhaps a few northern sides. The GPA are currently doing a survey to determine the biggest black spots so watch out for that report and factor it into your betting this summer.

Thats enough negatives on the state of the country, time for some negatives on selected counties

Those to Avoid:

Kerry: As I stated before, badly hit by recession, golden team now gone and I'm sticking with my guns again this season and writing them off for another season.

Tyrone: If they make the final in September, every neutral would be cheering them on after what happened to poor Mickey Harte. The man has some character after his great loss and no doubt the players will run through walls for him but for now I just cannot see them getting involves to challenge. They too have a squad that hasn't replaced the golden generation with winners yet. No doubt their strong minor team will emerge in the next few seasons but I'll swerve them for now.

Galway, Mayo & Limerick. John Mulholland is based in these 3 counties but has not really seen too much county pride in their sides. In fact more were betting against the Galway side to obvious financial gain in the league. John Mulhollands are best price on all 3 teams to win the championship at 40/1, 25/1 and 100/1 respectively. For those who don't understand betting that means if you were to put €10 on any of them to win, you'd lose a tenner.

But why so negative on Galway? Our own Alan Mulholland has just led the U-21's to an All Ireland title, St Jarlaths of Tuam just reached an All Ireland College final and a new star could emerge in Tomás Flynn to add to the a panel of Meehan and Armstrong. Simple fact is their own county down;t belive in them anymore and it will take more than one more season to change that. They have relied on Padriag Joyce too long and they have shown too much mental friality in recent years mostly when stepping out of Connacht but even Roscommon and Sligo have had their number in recent seasons. It's all their for them but the money says not this year. Maybe victor against Mayo on the 26th of June against Mayo in Castlebar would raise the optimism. One Caveat there thoough is Mayo have to beat London first.

Donegal, Sligo, Meath: Donegal confidence is high after they're great season in Division2 this season. However confidence was high after their national league title in 2007 and they flopped badly. Manager McGuiness has a new instilled belief in the side and they have stopped the habit of hand passing along the 45 then losing possession but they have to go the long way to Ulster title and an All Ireland 1/4 final would be the height of their achivements.

Sligo will fancy upsetting Galway and Mayo in Connacht again but they will not get near their first all Ireland. The standard in Connacht is the worst in Ireland. Meath had a horrendous league campaign nearly getting relegated from Div 3. They won a tainted Leinster title last season and it seems to be still weighing heavily on their shoulders. Leinster will be between Kildare and Dublin.

Down: I backed them to win Ulster last season and backed them throughout the season. I love their style of football and they have men all over the park that can gain scores, they don't just rely and Coulter and Clarke. However after the highs of last season, I cannot see them going on back to back runs. A huge meeting against Armagh could see them in the back door before they have even awoken and 16/1 is just no value.

Derry: Bradley is out for the season and with a semi final against the winners of Armagh v Down, I cannot see them making July. Their league campaign has been less impressive from seasons past and perhaps they are trying to time their run better but in the hustle and bustle of Ulster that requires plenty of luck.

Those to consider:

Cork- They are the best side, have an average height of 8 foot and although they don't possess any Gooch in their forward ranks, can overrun any side in Ireland with sheer superior strength. I cannot see them outside the final again having a soft campaign in Munster and I'd expect a better season that last now 20 years barren spell is over. Winning breeds confidence and while Dublin should have beaten them twice, will Dublin show the psychological scars Cork did for Kerry or Kerry did for Tyrone?

Dublin. I backed Dublin to win the league final against Cork and had the money already spent in my head only to watch in utter disbelief at their collapse. 8 points up, their last 20 minutes reminded me of Osama Bin Laden, All at sea. Perhaps that defeat will be a blessing in disguise as it defuses the hype machine but anything less that a final appearance would be an utter failure this season.

Armagh: My dark horses this season and a tasty price.Last season they were a disgrace against Mongahan but the young blood has now been integrated into the side and the ageing stars looks to have been replaced. No side other than Tyrone or Armagh has won Ulster since 1988 despite it being the hardest province but I can see the orchard men winning this the hard way. Losing to Down would not be the end of the world especially if they get a soft back down opener and gain momentum from there. This side are completely under the radar hence the price. They look ready to finally put down a challenge in the post Joe Kernan era.

Others to mention: Kildare are still on the improvement and can reach another 1/4 final and perhaps win Leinster while Monaghan will look to win Ulster for the first time since 1988 but it looks like a year to rebuild this season.

Who will win the Aintree National, well I haven't a clue as the last winner I backed was Hedgehunter. In the National that is, not last actual winner thought it sometimes feel like it.

High Voltage at Augusta-US Masters Danger Betting 2011

So the BBC have lost 2 days coverage, how ever will we manage without Alyiss's utter drivel and loads of close ups of Junipers and Magnalias and that aul bridge at the 12th. Sky jump in with their great new innovation 3D at the masters. Funny how quickly HD is no longer enough and we all need to upgrade our packages and get stupid glasses to watch TV properly now and now after losing Alyiss for two days we must suffer Monty live in our living rooms.nt to see that in 3D. Thankfully Setanta Ireland have secured all 4 days as well so I think they'll be my station of choice and use the Internet/red button for as much coverage as I can soak up for the week outside of broadcast.

This year John Mulholland have come up with another one of those money back specials to Putt the money back in your pocket even if you back a dud. You can select a danger bet to your bet, so say you want to back Harrington you can nominate Mickelson as your danger and if Mickelson wins, Mulholland's will refund your losing Harrington bet. Hey presto, you get to choose your own cashback. Neat heh!

So who should you select as your danger bet and more importantly who should you select as your wager.

First up, while most people will select wither Phil Mickelson or Tiger Woods as their danger, for me I'd choose Phil every time. He has won this 3 times since 2004 versus Tigers one and could of won in 2009 as well and has an unreal record around here and can never be discounted even if his form beforehand is rubbish. I backed him last season but not sure confidence is as high in him. I feel sick for not backing him last week at 10/1 and although few win the Masters after winning the week before, he is one of the few strolling to the Green Jacket in 2006. Price is a little skinny now but definitely my danger choice.

Martin Kaymer was selected at 45/1 back for the USPGA on this blog and now he is 18/1 for this tournament. He has come slightly off the boil of late after an impressive start to 2011. He hasn't a great record around Augusta and as a player who likes to use fade with his trajectory, that is not a tactic that bears fruit at Augusta unless your left handed like Mickelson. I'll pass at the odds.

Of the Irish, all shortish in the betting and to be honest I don't like any of them for the win. McDowell has been quite negative about his game recently, Mc Ilroy would put you in the poor house backing on the nose and Harrington has more negatives than a Irish banks balance sheet. McIlroy missed the cut last year but is still capable of going close but I see Harrington winning in the battle of the Irish at 15/8

The player at the prices that jumps out fo me is Nick Watney. He showed glimpses last season here that he can challenge finishing 7th after a sensational Sunday round. He won this seasons Cadillac Championship, has finished in the top 10 5 times out of six this season and is for me America's new top golfer.

Lee Westwood and Luke Donald appeal most of the English. People who claim Westwood choked last season are talking nonsense. Mickelson pulled off super human shots to pip him(watch video) and he could rediscover his form here again. Luke Donald is a steady Eddie and while he many not win, he could easily get involved and anything is possible come Sunday at Augusta

Friday's pot of Gold-Cheltenham Day 4

Cheltenham Gold Cup

2 out of 3 of my naps won with Big Zeb perhaps an unlucky second. If you missed them, fear not, my nap of the festival runs in the Gold Cup. Imperial Commander won last season in style in the race that was billed a two horse race between Kauto Star and Denman. Both horses have been written off this season as one paced old timers which is a bit harsh and while I think neither will win, I wouldn't rule them out of the places.

Long Run is the new pretender to the throne and at the Cheltenham preview night Anthony Bromley made a good case for not ruling him out on the basis of he doesn't suit Cheltenham. He claims he was over the top after a long season for the RSA chase last year and Henderson's horses were running terribly back in November. I backed him for the King George but I subscribe to the theory he suits flatter tracks like Kempton, Newbury and Warwick where we have seen the best of him.

Pandorama is another horse I tipped up back at Christmas for the Lexus and while he is another underrated Irish horse to the Brits, He does need plenty of soft in the description. He may get it if the forecast is right but he'll need plenty of rain in the night and morning to get involved. Has only lost once over fences so far.

Kempes has been popular in recent days but this would be a really bad Gold CUp if he was to win while Midnight Chase is a real Cheltenham course specialist and will make ita real test of stamina. He would need mistakes to happen in behind and skip ahead and hold on to the end but is not a forlorn hope.

However it all comes back to Imperial Commander has only lost once over fences round Cheltenham when he bounced after a recent run. He needs to go fresh and he has that. He should be so much shorter than he is and has to be backed to retain hit title.

Triumph Hurdle

Unnacompanied looked fantastic while winning last time out but the big thing that keeps putting me off is Dermot Weld's terrible record here. I hope he wins to break the hoodoo but I just can't bring myself to back him poor race, He's only had one winner in Britain over jumps since 2003. Zarkander is the Adonis winners which has supplied 4 out of the last 11 winners of this race and don't let me put you off but if he was the machine people say he is surely Ruby would be on him.Sam Winner looked fantastic in the early season but flopped at Chepstow in january. Paul Nicholls blames himself for running him on bottomless ground and if you forgive that run, he'd be short priced favourite here. I'm willing to forgive and suggest you do likewise.Henderson has won last two renewals and has a great record overall and while I don't fancy A Media Luz at all, Grandouet could get involved I don't see him as genuine favourite especially as he was a deservedly beaten By Sam Winner earlier in the season

Vincent O´Brien County Handicap Hurdle

This looks a trappy renewal as always and while some harbour resentment this is no longer the getting out stakes, I'd be delighted not to need this race to find my last winner at Cheltenham 2011. We'll still try and find one though. I backed Dee Ee Williams in this at a huge price last season and while I'm sure he'll come again, he looks to be in the handicappers grip. Instead I'm looking at another well handicapped on his best form who loves Cheltenham. Premier Dane nearly won this in 2008 and ran a good race back in December here off 11-9. He now carries 10-2 and can sneak into the 5 places on offer or even win. Alavian and Grey Soldier will be very popular in the shops and while I'd never write off Gordon Elliots charge Grey Soldier has not impressed me once over the last few seasons but perhaps the big day and all will bring out improvement

Albert Bartlett Novices´ Hurdle

Bobs Worth skipped the Neptunes in favour of this easier race and while I have no strong opinion on this race, it should be noted he had Rock on Ruby back in second at Cheltenham earlier in the season. Ground is a worry though as he may want it slower(rain may come tonight) Court in Motion has a poor run last time and better ground could see him getting involved

Christie´s Foxhunter Chase

Baby Run has a new jockey in the saddle in another of Twiston Davies young sons but that should not stop another repeat victory here. He won this by 5 lengths last season and has already two wins to his belt this season. It's an obvious choice but I will be steaming in especially if Imperial Commander wins the 3:20
On the Fringe has been the springer in the market and huge scope for improvement but I think this fella will be their next cross county champion.

Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys´ Handicap Hurdle

Qaspal's fitness has to be taken on trust but he looks the class act in a very poor race. This field really doesn't deserve its place at the festival

Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase Challenge Cup

The new getting out stakes is a lighting 2 miles around where they go like the clappers even faster in the early stages than the Champion Chase. Luck needs to be no your side

Pepe Simao has been the talking horse and don't be surprised if a gamble starts on the Walsh/Nicholls horse. In the last 10 years 7 winners have been priced less than 10/1 so plots are well established in this race. Tanks for That is the initial favourite as it's assumed Henderson always wants to win this and keeps one back. I'm not sure and reckon Henderson's great season so far has his horses high enough up the weights. Keki Buku is come up against some strong opposition this season in the likes of Rock Noir and off 10-7 could be just the type to go close at a big price

Big Bucks needed for festive celebrations

Well how's the week going. Only two days left and it's all over. I fancied Master Minded to get stuffed and saw it as a two horse race between Big Zeb and Sizing Europe. Wish I bothered to do the reverse forecast as it paid over €40. to a €1 stake. When will I ever learn. Chicago Grey keeps us in the black for the week and looking through the St Patrick's Day card, I see winners galore, what could possibly go wrong.

World Hurdle

You'll need Big Bucks in your pocket already if you want to win Bucks Bucks by backed Big Bucks in the World Hurlde. Will he win? Well he has won his last 10 starts and done it without breaking sweat. He is a two time champion and has had this division to his self for over 18 months. This field is not too shabby though. Grand Crus has

emerged as the young pretender to Big Bucks throne and has been visually very impressive and importantly has some course and distance form in the book. The big danger is of course the ground. There is no way they'll withdraw him for the race but they have done as such each time the ground has been on the fast side. He'll need a deluge to beat Big Bucks and that looks heavily odds against. Big Bucks should be heavy odds on with the ground conditions.

If Rigour Back Bob wins, there will be some party in the streets of Galway courtesy of John Mulholland. There has been loads of bets struck at fancy prices and you can still get some on the Edward O Grady trained horse. He looks to be running for 3rd and is not a forlorn hope who could relish the better ground.

Ashkazar loves it around here and also can get in the shakedown for the places. Of the Willie Mullins two, my preference would be Fiveforthree despite the jockey bookings. Bertie's Dream is another bogey horse of John Mulholland after cleaning out the tills at 33/1 in last season's Albert Bartlett Novice Hurdle. I thought he was a pig back then, a pig still but I'm more sensible to write off Gilligan horses completely. At at big price I like Celestial Halo and can see owner having a one-two. He would of stepped up to this trip ages ago if it were not for Big Bucks already as he looked tailor made for it. Flopping over fences he has came back down over the smaller obstacles(Just like Big Bucks) and looks a decent each way bet.

Ryanair Chase

This looks one of the weakest renewals of this event for some time but thankfully we have a great chance of backing a winner so who cares. Albertas Run won this last season doing handstands. His form this season has been rank rotten but don't let that put you off. He is game, will love the ground and should win. Poquelin has looked better than ever this season after winning off top weight in the big Cheltenham handicap in December but the old stat about horses last running being outside the calendar year is holding up this week and at the prices is one to take on. Kalahari King will have his fans and Ferdy can get them ready but I fancied him in last season's Champion Chase and he let me down badly, one bitten twice shy. At a huge price Hey Big Spender could get involved while J'y Vole may have ran well in this last season but she's not a horse to trust with your last shilling

Pertemps Final

Rivage D'or has been some bridesmaid but got his head in front last time out. Michael O Leary's horses are flying! after a double on the Wednesday and he'll have his supporters with plenty of bets already struck on him in the John Mulholland shops. I couldnt put you off him but one that appeals at a huge price is one of my old favourite horses who has dropped down the weights nicely is Kayf Aramis. Winner two seasons ago, he has a mark now to repeat.

Jewson Novices´ Chase

Two wins so far for Hobbs/Johnson and I backed neither. Captain Chris's Arkle win caught most people out as he was fairly beaten by Ghiazo and Medermit beforehand and was expected to run here instead. They had Wishfull Thinking here so there was no need to fire two darts and if everything goes well, this thing will jump up handy can win in a canter. racing doesnt always work out like that but even at 3/1, that looks a fair price. Loosen My Load and Noble Price have to be respected but on official figures then need to find something more to trouble the favourite

Byrne Group Plate

Call me a Legend looks another strongly handicapped Alan King horse and while beaten by the probable favourite Aigle D'or back in November, these formlines can turn on its head at the festival and I just can't get away from King's handicap chances. It didn't do me any harm in the Spinal Research Handicap Chase. Tatenen is another who could get involved havnig been revitalised since leaving Paul Nicholls but it's a big burden to concede.

Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup

Last season Galant Nuit was a big talking horse for Ferdy Murphy and has had only one this season over HURDLES. He is now 6 pounds lighter than his 3rd in the race last season and has the services of Nina Carberry in the saddle. While plenty of others stand out as potential winners like Saddles Storm, Pomme Tiepy and Billie Magern, I would side with the horse we know will enjoy the Cheltenham circuit

Your guide to Wednesday(A to Zeb)

Ruby Walsh is the bane of bookies lives. He is off the course for most of the last season, has his first winner on Saturday and comes back and wins 3 out of 4 rides on the opening day. We managed 2 winners with our tips so not too shabby. Hope some of you availed.

Queen Mother Champion Chase

Big Zeb should really be clear favourite for this race. He won going away last season and if we excuse the last run when he went a mile too soon, he would be a lot shorter. I'm delighted he flopped that day as now the price is bigger and he is always due one bad race. The Tied Cottage was it and he comes to Cheltenham ready to defend his crown

Master Minded has no chance in my opinion. (Famous last words). He needs slow ground and while Nicholls is screaming that another one of his wind operations has done the oracle and he doesn't hang right anymore, I don't believe it and even if he has fixed those problems he'll still watch Big Zeb's arse sail into the sunset up that hill . NO CHANCE

Woolcome Folly has become one of those stats attacks horse. He is a handicapper that set a fast time on his last outing getting the anoraks buzzing.Time is for prisoners and will be of no benefit to him here where he'll meet proper opposition.

Somersby is the money horse with Mulhollands in the antepost markets. Most people believe he should go for the Ryanair but Henrietta is going for this. Hen Knight has had 6 winners all season and I just think he needs too many things to drop for him to win.

Golden Silver has ran twice at Cheltenham and twice ran like Sonia O Sullivan in Atlanta. I have already said that victory over Big Zen must be taken with sachet of salt and I will overlook him again.

The danger for me is Sizing Europe. Winner of last season's Arkle, he goes well fresh, loves Cheltenham and is the biggest danger in the field.

Neptune Investment Management Novices´ Hurdle

This is a race the Irish will be disappointed to leave behind

So Young is from the same sire as Mikael D'Hagenenut and his form looks even better going into this race. He looks a fantastic horse an looks sure to get involved. He is another of those "could be anything" horses

Oscar Wells will be one of the Irish hotpots and his last win was a serious piece of work. He turned many doubters into believers destroying Zaidpour, Hidden Unniverse and Shot From The Hips. He deserves to be favourite and will win IF he can handle the ground. I'm not sure he will though.

First Lieutenant is another top Irish horse and Mouse Morris thinks the world of this yoke. Worth an each way interest. None of the English appeal.

VERDICT:So Young

RSA Chase Grade 1

Time for Rupert is certainly lacking in Chase form for a favourite for a RSA but what he does have is C&D(course and distance). He is many people's banker of the week but bankers just cost us money, a lot of money.I expect bookies to get stuck into him to get him beat and the cotton wool approach would be a worry but is this the strongest renewal? or just a cast of horses scared out of the staying hurdle division by Big Bucks. Mikael D'haguenet looks like he will never be the horse he was capable of being and the Mullins yard believe Quel Esprit is their best chance. AiteenThirtyThree looks uncomplicated and just looks a out and out chaser but I worry if something with some gears comes alongside him he will have no answer and especially it's been deserted by Ruby Walsh.

Wymott again has looked unspectacular this season but will have his supporters and Master Of The Hall again just doesn't look good enough.

Time for Rupert's win at Cheltenham over Chicago Grey worries me. Elliot says Chicago Grey wouldn't get within an asses roar of beating Jessies Dream and if that really is the case coupled with the fact I'm a big fan of the horse anyways after beating Mikael D'haguenet and winning a hot chase race at Galway early in the season so we know he'll go up the hill no bother, I have to back the Irish horse to win. Forget the last run, Timmy had a bit of a lobotomy moment.

141st Year of National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup (Amateur Riders´ Novices´ Chase)

Ireland has a terrible record in this race with only one win ni 10 years(and that at 40/1) but they appear to have a serious strong hand with Alpha Beat and Chicago Grey. We know Chicago Grey will enjoy the course and go up the hill and has enjoyed a wee break after a long 2010 and don't let me put you off. Alpha beat also has hill form at Galway winning at August and will love the ground. See how the market goes as Charles Byrnes horse could be another plot horse.

At an outside price Regal Approach will be worth an interest as it's battle hardy and will find trip OK, ground is a concern though.

VERDICT: Chicago Grey.

Coral Cup (Handicap Hurdle) Grade 3

For all the runners only one horse stands out. Call the Police will get hammered in the ring and could go off a silly price but he looks the most likely winner and I can't find anything else in the race to take him on with.

Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Grade 3

Plan A looks a plot job here and while the cat is kind of out of the bag, horses at the front of the market do well enough in this race with Sanctuaire perhaps the most impressive winner of the week last season

Champion Bumper

Well with a week to go it was 8/1 the field and the most open in recent years. The form is just so hard to gauge and really it looks a bit of a lottery. That won't stop us having a go but I think the last bumper winner I backed was Total Enjoyment back in 2004. Raise the Beat as the intial talking Irish horse but to be honest if he was that good I think the price would have been smashed into.

John Shark Hanlon rates Star Neauville the best horse he has ever trained and word is he is slaughtering Luska Lad on the gallops. The booking of AP Mc Coy is a huge plus and he must enter calculations.

Nicky Henderson traditionally shuns this race but his horse Ericht has shown perhaps the best form on the course with his last win and he's the selection.

Off to a Flyer? Day One of the Cheltenham Festival

Anybody who followed this blog back when it was a direct email last season would remember I managed a pretty good return with winners like Sizing Europe, Alberta's Run,Big Zeb, Poker Di Sivola, Imperial Commander, Baby Run and Big Bucks so that must mean I'm due a rotten year this season and should be avoided like the plague now. Over the next few days I'll be trying unearth a few winners and put them down on paper for you to laugh at and abuse. This season's racing is the 100th year of the festival and looks so wide open I suspect we may see one winner reach the 100/1 price so don't be afraid of the outsiders. The big race on day one is the champion hurdle and if somebody put a gun to my head and asked for the winner, I'd probably end up dead. Won't stop me giving it a go though.

Stan James Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy Grade 1 Cl1 2m110y

Like so many of this years races, formlines are thin on the ground due to a harsh winter.Binocular was due to be favourite and I was very keen to take him on at the prices but I guess that's one less horse to worry about,Peddlers Cross has had an interrupted schedule, Menorah has not been seen since early December and the stats say horses should run at least once in the year of the festival, Khyber Kim has had only one run and was more rotten than last weeks milk and from what and Mille Chief have shown would struggle to suggest he can win. Oscar Whisky could be anything and wouldn't put off any of his backers as he really could be top drawer, though he could like one of those drawer's men have with old wasted batteries in it.

Hurricane Fly has beaten all that has been put in front of him this season and after beating Solwhit four times punters are starting to suggest that maybe Solwhit is no longer a good yardstick. I would disagree, he is a top class horse who has shown it against every other horse bar Hurricane Fly. Hurricane Fly may have had some slower run races back in Ireland and is yet to run on British soil but if he can overcome that, he will win. (Paddy Mullin promised his classmates he'd walk around campus in only flip flops and speedos if he lost) . He has ridden both Hurricane Fly and Menorah and sees it a two horse race between the two.
Trying to work out the race, we must examine the pace. Peddlers Cross & will make it a tough battle all the way to the line. Oscar Whiskey and Menorah will travel well and it's not forlorn to expect 5 in a line coming around the final bend and then it's all about who is best on the day. Hurricane Fly has won 8 grade ones and they were not soft races. This is an all star cast and even Khyber Kim or the forgotten Dunguib could get in the shakedown but at the prices Hurricane Fly is a no brainer as he didn't win 8 soft grade 1's and the UK bookies are clearly underrating him. I would of preferred Paul Townsend as jockey but hey why not let Ruby Walsh win his first ever champion hurdle after all the injuries in the last year.

Irish Independent Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase Grade 1 Cl1 2m

Not a race I hold a strong opinion, perhaps that could be said of a few races this season thanks to the cotton wool approach from most trainers. One stat that appears constant in this race is it's a poor one for favourites with only Azertyuiop winning since 1997 but in the same time frame only one horse bigger than 10-1 has won it also so it's best to concentrate at the top of the market. Ghiazo has done nothing wrong beating Captain Chris here at Cheltenham by 10 lengths and again by 4&1/2 lengths in Newbury. On the formbook there really is nothing to suggest Captain Chris can turn the tables. Best rated over hurdles and that's another high stat for finding the winner is Medermit, another of conqueror of Captain Chris. He was beaten at Cheltenham by Hells Bay(entered in RSA chase) but was a little unlucky that day and hard to see out of the first 3. At the prices Ghiazo looks the most obvious choice and anything that beats him will likely win.

Stan James Supreme Novices' Hurdle Grade 1 Cl1 2m110y

The record of Cheltenham bumper winners is shocking and while Cue Card looked every bit as good as Dunguib we all know what happened to that one's Supreme challenge a year ago

As with Dunguib, there had been talk of going for the Champion Hurdle and only for his defeat at Cheltenham by Menorah, he would probably would be going there or would be odds on here. He is rated about 11 pounds superior to anything else in the race and may prove a much better bet than Dunguib did 12 months ago. Joe Tizzard is very bullish, my only concerns are lack of a run and perhaps he may pull to hard early and not settle.

Dunraven Storm has twice finished behind Cue Card and has been kept away since a disappointing run at Haydock where he appeared to be injured. Perhaps he injured himself that day in his loss to Cur Card as he was challenging until clobbering the hurdle 2 out. Whats most interesting with this runner is that Hobbs has only declared him here while many suggested he'd be upped in trip to the Neptunes Novice Hurdle. Take the hint and go each way at a huge price. He was 50/1 a few weeks ago but he's still value each way.

He also put the Totesport trophy winner and recent talked about horse Reccession Proof in his box earlier in the season. Why take 8/1 on one horse while you can get 28/1 on the other.

Nicky Henderson can usually be relied on to have a major contender in this race and although he hasn't won it as often as the markets have suggested, he must really fancy his chances this year promising Sprinter Sacre ,Sprint Son ,and unbeaten Gibb River in the line-up.

Spirit Son looks the stable's number one and he goes into the race with a faultless record, having won a Listed hurdle in France on his debut and impressing with the manner of his victories on two very different tracks at Huntingdon and Exeter although in time it is expected Sprinter Sacre will be the stable star, maybe he just isn't ready for it yet.

In Ireland Zaidpour looked to be a real star in the early season but his form has tailed off. Perhaps the better ground could revive his fortunes. Al Ferof is another who can lay it down and his fall at Cheltenham when he has the race at his mercy just makes me wonder could we have another Noland opening victory for Ruby Walsh

Stewart Family Spinal Research Handicap Chase Grade 3 Cl1 3m110y

At the Cheltenham Preview night Anthony Bromley was very sweet on Bensalem. He rates Alan King's horse to be about a stone better than he is rated. You must take into account that Alan King's horses have been under a cloud for over a season and now they have emerged from that poor form. When that happens, all his horses who have been running poorly suddenly are well treated by the handicapper. Bensalem has also not run over fences since falling in this race last year when traveling well. He has run twice this season over hurdles and acquitted himself very well. This means the handicapper hasn't been able to reassess his chase form and stick his weight up any more so he gets in off 11 stone. That is technically a few pounds too much on the stats but if he really is a stone better, then he is more than capable of defying it and while a boring selection, he is the bet of the race especially with Blazing Bailey high in the weights to ensure he doesn't go up more than 2 pounds.

Of the others, 6 extra pounds might not stop Chief Dan George retaining the race and while they may win Sunnyhillboy, Reve De Sivola & Great Endeavour look about the right price in the market and none jump out as exceptional value. At an outside price Adams Island might come into the equation. While I cannot see any value left in the race at this stage, on the form book Sunnyhillboy should beat Great Endeavour getting lumps of weight compared to last season's Byrne's Plate but I just can't get away from Alan King's potential in handicaps this season and while boring to tip a favourite, I must back the most likely winner.

Glenfarclas Handicap Chase (A Cross Country Chase) Cl2 3m7f

While some people see this as some kind of novelty bet and head for the bar, I must confess I love these races. Partly because it's great to see certain excellent jumping horses, who would probably be a little short of speed excel in this domain. I backed Spotthedifference blind for a few seasons to an enjoyable profit and moved over to Garde Champetre soon after. One of the most disappointing results last season was Garde Champetre
(didn't even finish in the first 4 to stop my placepot). Nina got badly hampered coming around a bend on the figure of eight course and just couldn't make up the ground. Another defeat in November and suddenly she is a very backable price at 9/2. Yes she's giving weight to everybody else but she's done that countless times before. Weight is not the deterrent it is in other races. L'ami only gets a pound off and that simply is nowhere near enough to beat Garde Champetre. What is most needed though is course experience. Horses simply cannot win first time out on the cross country circuit. The best any horse managed first time out is Maljimar
a 3 length 3rd to Garde Champeter in December 09. Nick Williams horse missed the cross country last season in favour at a tilt at the National. Lets not forget how close Maljimar was to winning the William Hill Chase at the festival a few seasons ago so he clearly loves the track

As much as the heart love Garde Champetre the head says Maljimar is the each way steal in the race.

VERDICT: Maljimar

David Nicholson Mares´ Hurdle Grade 2

Very hard to oppose Quevega even at the prices. She has won this 2 years in a row and last year on her seasonal bow. Nothing else in the race looks good enough to beat her even though Sparky May has looked decent in races this season I don't think her defeat of Carole's Legacy is strong enough form if Quevega is still as good as the last two seasons. At the prices L'accordioniste appeals most each way as she won when Twiston Davis stable would normally be in a mid season lull and may be much better stepping up in trip and should come in the first 3 either way.

Centenary Novices' Handicap Chase (Listed Race) Cl1 2m4f110y

At our preview night Paul Kealy put up Definity as his bet of the festival. Paul Nicholls has also said he this is his handicap bet of the week but no offense to Paul Nicholls, he's no better a tipster than an some eegit in Mulhollands. Too often he gets it completely wrong and while I won't say he attempts to people away, If you took his word on each horse at face value, I don't think you'd be showing a profit over the last few seasons. I do however thing he could win this race, just not with Definity, American Trilogy won the county hurdle a few seasons back and went straight in the notebook as a potential handicap chase winner. We know he loves Cheltenham and his previous run behind Captain Chris is best overlooked at face value. His form going into the county hurdle was also rubbish and he looks the best bet at a decent price in the race.

February for many means spring is in the air and what better way to celebrate than clean the house from top to bottom with the mother of all dusting and tiding. Without sounding like Richard Keys or Andy Gray, while your busy doing that, I'll be making in a groove into the armchair with the sport that awaits for the next two months. Superbowl Sunday, the return of the proper stages of the Champions League, Cheltenham just around the corner and my personal fav, the RBS Six Nations championship. There is simply no greater way for us to gain bragging rights over our neighboring countries than this, now that they're all laughing at us as our Celtic tiger looks like a poor cat dead at the side of the road, abandoned without hope. Winning another grand slam would certainly left the mood of the nation again.Who will win this year. Can we beat England for the 7th time in 8 years?

I give my verdict on this season's finishing positions but you'll get a chance to challenge my prediction and win a wee free bet for your troubles.

England-Verdict: 1st

England are slight favourites for the first time since 2003. They also haven't really came within as asses roar of winning it since then either and while it's wide open on paper, England look ready to step up to the mark. Back to back victories from the Wallabies and even defeat to the Springbox will have shown them the fruits of their labour are starting to surface and the panel looks ready to make the step up. One worry is the injury to winger Chris Ashton who along with Ben Foden have given Northampton and England the ammunition in the backs to open up opposition. Anything else but 4 wins would be failure this season.

Scotland-Verdict: 2nd

"Scotland second, this fella is off his rocker" I hear you say. Well yes perhaps I am being a little generous and a heavy defeat to France away first time out and it may look like as clever as a Brian Cowen reshufflement. I fancied them last season to do well and when you stop and think about it, they should of walked away with a triple crown. An unbelievable finish to the Welsh game when they had it in the bag only for a horror injury(which retired Thom Evans) and being reduced to 13 men cost a big early victory, a draw with England that they should of won and finished with a deserved victory in Dublin. They will fancy beating Wales and Ireland again and while I can't see a victory in Twickenham, catching France early is always the best time to cause an upset. They don't score many tries(7 in 13 games) and if they start poorly, it's an uphill battle all the way.

France-Verdict: 3rd

Last season's champions possess all the talent to go back to back. However with a horror loss to Australia in November, coupled with the fact it's a World Cup year and they must travel to Dublin and London, I don't fancy them this season. They will stay under the radar for the season before catching one of the southern hemisphere cold come knockout stages in the World Cup.

Ireland-Verdict: 4th

Ireland tend to to well in the odd years on account of the fact England and France must come to us. We only lost one game in 07, 03 and 07 and finally got our just rewards in 09. Why am I so pessimistic this season? 7 injuries against Italy and even if the likes of Heaslip, Ferris and Bowe make it back for France, I can't accept they'll be at full fitness. One of the areas that really concerns me is full back. Munster and Leinster both use non Irish full backs and we really need somebody who excels in that position rather than trying to squeeze either Earls or Fitzgerald into it. It's a specialist position and one which teams will look to exploit though the campaign. The other reason I don't like our chances is the visit of England. I already alluded to the fact I believe they'll win the championship(maybe even Grand Slam) and although we have beaten them every time since that horror day in 2003, bar the end of the Eddie o Sulliavn era 08 match, I see England winning on their first visit to the new Landsdowne Road.

Wales-Verdict:5th

Six defeats and a shambolic draw against Fiji in his last seven Tests means Warren Gatland might not get to lead Wales to the World Cup in his native New Zealand. No Welsh side has made the last 8 of the Heineken Cup or Amlin cup and suddenly you'd have to be one eternal Welshman to fancy their chances. Win against England on opening night and they'll probably feel they can go on a do another 08 Grand Slam. Lose like they're expected and the match against Italy on the 26th of March will be a wooden spoon encounter

Italy-Verdict: 6th
Italy were the bettors favourite team for the first few years they entered the six nations. Back them on the spread and they ended in profit year after year as bookies underestimated their ability. The last two seasons has seen a decline though as Italy have started to go backwards in relation to the other sides. Sergio Parisse is back this season and they have finally sorted out that horredous scrum half problem with the introduction 20-year-old Edouardo Gori. Couple with the inclusion this season of Aironi and Treviso into this season's Magners league and there is room for optimism again but I think they need another season in transition. Now watch them go and beat a wounded Ireland for the first time ever in Six nations history.

Oh What's Occuring- and another Welsh institution.

I don't know if Welsh people really talk like that, I'm pretty sure none of them say "What's Occuring" but if they were describing their big race this weekend, I'm sure they'd say it was "Crackin" and its going to be "well lush". Well hopefully not too much lush, lush of snow that is which is threatening this rearranged race from 27th of December. The bloody weather is coming back and it's ruining all our horsey fun.

The Christmas period was good except for all the racing going by the wayside. 3 out of 5 of my horses to follow won and one 3rd and one non runner, we should be happy attacking the first big prize of the New Year. The Welsh National is the first of the nationals run over 3 .5 miles on a tough uphill finishing Chepstow. Get your bets on for 1:45 and its live on BBC Two.

SYNCHRONISED has been heavily backed to give McCoy his first win in the Welsh National after his dream first win at Aintree last season and his big BBC Sports Personality Award in December. Good Luck to him but this horse has done nothing to deserve to go off that kind of price. John Mulhollands have a huge priced special though available until Friday evening to jazz it up however if you fancy him. SYNCHRONISED to win the race, Leinster to beat the Ospreys(Fri) and Martin Adams to win the BDO darts championship. It pays less than 10/1 but they are offering it up at 15/1

Only one horse has carried more than 11 stone to victory in the last 10 years and two horses should be backed against the favourite. I´MONCLOUDNINE has the form and should handle the distance and ground. He was quietly fancied to win the Beecher but unseated and forgiving that run and the gap he's had, he's well worth a go at 20/1. Neil Mulholland, his trainer and no relation to us I'm afraid horses are running extremely well right now and that's a huge plus when you consider many trainers are behind with their horses due to the cold snap.

ROYAL ROSA is another worth a go at a huge price 33/1. He finished second in the Beecher and has always had serious talent but a bit of a Jamie Redknapp on the injury front. Only as the price is too big, I can't resist having a go. Very capable of running a huge race.

The MCR hurlde is Sunday and John Mulhollands are taking the bulls by the horns and offering 5 places in the big race. It could be a mistake though as PRIMA VISTA now looks like an each way bet to nothing. He'll go off fav and understandably after his impressive last run and the old adage of a top class graded horse posing in a handicap springs to mind

Well we lost the first two days Leopardstown early along with a host of other meetings including pushing back the Welsh National. The new Christmas song racing fans will sing is "I'm dreaming of a green Christmas. With even Wolverhampton on the 26th in trouble, you know its been a rotten time for us gee gee lovers.

So instead of giving you a preview of each day I'm just going to run the rule over my horses to watch out for over the Christmas period when or if they get onto the racetrack. As it stands St Stephen's day is going to be the quietest ever while the good racing will take place at the end of the week. Racing Post preview of the big two races at Kempton 27th by Mark Winstanley(the Couch)

Now in the King George it looks on paper as perhaps Kauto Star's toughest field to beat. You can make a great case for Sizing Europe, Nacarat, Albertas Run,Long Run and even Forpaddytheplaster. While many will dismiss Long Run after two disappointing runs at Cheltenham it should be remembered his best performance in the UK was at Kempton last season in the Feltham. However we all know how good Kauto is here and really I can't agree with the Couch Winstanley and any bet would be for me in the Without Kauto market and watch the champ in action. There is no reason to look to take him on and if you like odds on shots, he looks a decent bet to make it 5 in a row. Not my style and I'm going to have a small wager on Nacarat without Kauto.

In the Christmas hurdle last season Binocular nearly fell over early and ruined any chance of victory. McCain's horse Overturn will be popular with Galway punters after his Galway hurdle win but McCain has stated that his Peddler's Cross would give this guy 7 pounds and an easy beating. Starluck looks the danger to Binocular but if McCoys horse started to hit 3/1 he would simply become too big a price and worth backing. Khyber Kim is an animal i love and he goes well fresh. Danger being though is does he go right handed? Escortmen another at a bigger price that could go well on a track he loves

Pandorama (Lexus Chase)28th 2:35.
His only defeat in Ireland was at odds on to Mikael D'Hagaeguent. Pulled up in the Hennessey, Noel Meade's star will come on for the run and is a course and distance winner here. Good field and with testing ground expected Joncol will be a tough foe to crack but he is the class animal in the race and expect a decent price to boot

Rigour Back Bob (Christmas Hurdle) 28th 2:00
Winner last time out at Navan, this horse can put wins up in a sequence and with a dearth of talent at 3 miles hurdles he can shine above his Irish rivals on route to making up the numbers against Big Bucks later in the season.

Drumbaloo (Future Champion Novice Hurdle)29th 12:50
He completely flopped in the champion bumper but what he showed beforehand suggests he could still have a big future. You can always forgive horses one bad run especially if you get a nice price next time. Bishopsfurze should keep the price honest but this is JJ Lambes best horse and expect the shrewd trainer to have him ready for his seasonal bow.

Big Zeb (Paddy Power Dial a bet chase) 29th 1:20
Last seasons champion chaser faces Captain Cee Bee and Golden Silver and while tough company he is the star amongst them and he should be backed to win again on route to another defence of his title.

Hurricane Fly (December Hurdle) 29th 1:55
Not an original choice but after beating Solwhit on his seasonal bow with the former having a run under his belt, it's time to start to face facts. This animal is the real deal and while we won't get rich backing him, he cannot be opposed.

Following Arsenal in the big matches is like following a relative visit to the toilets this morning after he'd consumed a big turkey dinner and 6 cans of Guinness. Stinks isn't the word as Arsene Wenger's men have failed to beat either Chelsea or Man Utd in 11 games and suddenly you start to realise why they have won nothing in 6 seasons. They lacked any ambition at Old Trafford and a defeat here would see them trail Man Utd by 5 points and a game more played.

I'm not convinced either that Chelsea have turned the corner. A draw against Spurs does not say their season is back on track but they too won't want to fall further behind Utd. I'm of the opinion this game is more crucial to Arsenal though. Defeat here and it is the end of the road for this team. So brilliant at times, how can their ego take another big match defeat and stay on course for a title. Drogba is the cashback and a great one at that given his record against Arsenal but the only bet I'm having is Sami Nasri to get on the scoresheet @13/5

The best bit of arrows since since Harold's eye got a nasty surprise at the battle of Hastings returns to Alexandra Palace tonight. While Christmas time for most people means too much food, buying presents for people and watching reruns of the Gavin and Stacey, to any big sports fan, it means only one thing. Darts is back on sky and Phil "The Power" Taylor may have turned 50 this year but he's still the man to beat. A 16th title is an odds on chance but support against the champ is growing.

He does have a tricky route to the final with matches against John Part, Paul Nicholson, Mark Webster and Simon Whitlock is is possible route. at 1/2 I'd prefer to give it a miss especially with his surprise defeats in the PDC World Cup and Players Championship.

So who could beat him. The men i stated as his route are all capable of taking his scalp on a going day but betting in this tournament is really reserved to each way bets on the other side of the draw. The best bet in the tournament is Barney. Van Barneveld won the PDC World Cup along with Co Stompe and his game is reported to be back as his confidence has grown playing with his buddy and he has sacked his entourage and gone back to the management that helped him to his five world Titles. He has had a soft preparation and goes well fresh.

James Wade is on the other side of the half and is the 8/1 second favourite. John Mulholland are enhancing him to a top price 9/1(win only) so if you fancy him to take out Taylor many will fancy that. personally I don't rate him at the highest stage. He did win the World Grand Prix in Dublin but that was a funny tournament and Mark Walsh could take him out in the 1/4 finals. Simon Whitlock is another for money and should make the semi's where he is scheduled to meet Taylor. He again is another good each way bet against Taylor and if Taylor falls early he will be near favourite and worth a nibble at 14/1

Will Cheltenham will pay for christmas?

I bloody hope so. All I've bought for the missus so far is a wooden leg and that's only good as a stocking filler. My child still believes in Santa and unfortunately so does this wife. While gambling can never be encouraged to pay for ones expenses, this weekend's racing at Cheltenham offers the chance to make some big money from smaller stakes. So instead of tackling a card with well thought out careful analysis and avoiding any silly bets I'm diving right in for the big return off the small stakes. No more small profit from disciplined bets its all duck or no dinner time( Don't really gamble the dinner money)

With a set stake of €20 I'm going to try and turn that into a a 3 figure amounts that isn't €2:38. In fact if my Lucky 15 goes right I'll start to understand why it's called Lucky. I must point out I've never picked 4 winners on one docket. Luck doesn't shine on me that much I'm afriad. Usually winners come with hard graft but no more.

So is the races the best way to go? Should I go for a more reliable sporting bet this weekend?
Well there is some sizzlers with Newcastle v Liverpool, Spurs v Chelsea, UK Snooker, Munster v Ospreys and Man Utd v Arsenal.

So I guess the best way to play it is a crazy €5 accum and a €1 Lucky 15 on the horse racing front.

You need a banker to your bet and the racing tomorrow throws out a few that many will be keen to bet heavily in Sam Winner, Master Minded and Time for Rupert. But none of these will make me rich and while I'd normally back at least one of these, there are reasons too why all 3 could get beat. Sam Winner has to give a stone to French Oaks 3rd A Media Luz, Master Minded is not the horse he was despite his win last time out and Time for Rupert although a top animal may lose out to a Chicago Grey who has kept work on the Dundalk all weather with the cold snap not abating.

Celestial Halo is back over hurdles and I've always seen him as a more middle distance hurdler and this race should suit. Somersby was second in the Arkle and while I found it hard to dismiss Gauvain and Kalahari King, He looks the biggest danger to Master Minded who I fancy to get beat. Great Endeavour was a winner at the festival last season but was useless the first race this season. I'm prepared to forgive this run due to his price and his talent. Cue Card is the best and shortest prices of the horses and I can see him beating Menorah as Menorah needs a bigger field and a fast pace to get the best our of him.

Now onto my mad €5 accumulator to try and win some readies if the horses go Sophie Dahl (pear shaped). I'll go a for a mixture of football, rugby and NFL. No problem then. This will return €474.77

On top of this we have seen Lord Triseman land out on his backside for claiming the Spanish and Russians were in cahoots, we have seen Russia claim England is full of drunk knife yielding yobs(hello kettle), Spain/Portugal apparently were cozying up to Qatar for favours and its suddenly these guys make you wonder are we too harsh on the Irish Government.

The only bid not tarnished is Belgium/Holland but their odds are 50/1. The problem here is that they don’t have government backing or enough big stadia..

England is now 13/8. The positives being its ready made. They could host the thing tomorrow without any need to improve stadia or infrastructure. After the World Cups of South Africa and Brazil (how bad could that turn out?) it would be wise for FIFA to go for the safe option, have a giant well run World Cup comparable to Germany 2006.

One of the main drawbacks for England is in truth down to 2006. This is how vote could breakdown after round one with Holland/Belgium eliminated if Engalnd win all those members they need to win. Of course the vote is secret and I am merely offering an opinion but at best I can see Spain/Portugal with 8, England with 8 and Russia with 6. This would mean Russia (the Even money favourite) would be eliminated in round 2. The problem I see is England are unlikely to win all 8 and even if they did, natural anti English bias after the scandals would push the members left to vote for whoever was left. I simply cannot see England winning the bid.

So who will win between Russia and Spain/Portugal?

Russia is just another Sepp Blatter dream. Spread the football to the new market to maximize revenue. The problem is 13 out 16 Stadiums would need to be built or massively refurbished. It would be the largest land mass ever for a World Cup and even with high speed rail(that only links 6 cities) air travel would be necessary between stadiums. They have talked about pockets for certain groups and the funding appears to be there. But what is also there is Racism. Russia football would make English football from the 80’s wince. Banana chants and boos of Black players is widespread and while Russia would promise to sort it out before the World Cup starts that coupled along with the public spats with England and vastness of the country may make it a gamble not worth taking.

Spain/Portugal also has the Stadiums like England. It has the transport and it has the climate and right TV zone. It has everything England boasts except they haven’t made any enemies. Spain last hosted the World Cup in 1982 and Portugal recently hosted Euro 2004 but they are the right bid and only co hosting is the big drawback along with perhaps Ireland causing their economies to collapse and bringing down the whole of the EU. They were 7/1 a few weeks ago and are now 3/1. Follow the money as they are no way the outsiders of 3. 7 votes look in the bag out of 22 look on the cards and once it becomes a choice between them and either |Russia or England, expect the neutral to favour the Iberians

How to win the Ten to Follow?

Entering through John Mulhollan's is a must for the Tote ten To Follow as it gets you entry into the official competition as well as the John Mulholland side pool so two sets of prizes for the same price.

There that's my attempt at marketing, now onto how to win the bloody thing.

Many syndicates will invest larges sums of money but don't let that detract from the single entrant. Last season Johnny Leonard won the John Mulholland version with a single entry and collected a cool €3,ooo for his selections. I spoke to him about how he sets about winning it and we agreed on a few things and argued on a few others. First things first. The Bonus races

Winning the big bonus races will propel you out above pack. Johnny had Big Zeb, Big Bucks and Binocular last season and went up the leaderboard with Usain Bolt type speed. He looks most carefully at the Paddy Power, King George, the Irish champion hurdle and 6 Cheltenham races as the rest are too hard to guage this far out.

The winner of the big races is of course imperative and some horses will be on everybody's list but for good measure. There is no point ignoring all the big horses as you think others will have them. Look to have 5-6 big horses and your own selections, try to get the balance right. Leaving out Kauto Star over the years would have been folly as the King George was a bonus race and no point throwing away a minimum of 25 points. Whether you believe Kauto is now over the hill and worth leaving out is another matter.

My stone wall one this season has to be Imperial Commander, he will win the Betfair Chase and will finish in the first two in the Gold Cup injury permitting. I believe he can't be left out but it's a game of opinions. Johnny agrees and we both believe Binocluar and especially Big Bucks must also be on the list.

Binocular was in nearly everybody's list ad proved a serious disappointment until the champion hurdle. He will be better this season and can defend his title.

Big Bucks is another that just cannot be left out unless you know the rest of the racing world doesn't as he has the staying hurdles division to himself and nothing can get near him.

The 2 mile chase division is harder to guage but Big Zeb will win Irish prizes as well as going close again in the Champion Chase. Doubtful we'll see him in the Tingle Creek as he'll likely stay at left handed tracks. Master Minded would do well to come back and Sizing Europe doesn't have a Azertyuiop/Moscow Flyer profile. perhaps a French breed horse not even on the list will emerge this season.

The Paddy Power Gold Cup is the first bonus race and Long Run is a short price favourite. He will be in loads of people's lists and with good reason as this is his trip and although high in the weights, his Jockey(Sam Waley Chohen) will be able to claim and should make amends for a poor RSA. We both agreed he is worth sticking in

The Hennessy could have Denman and Kauto Star both in the race and heavens knows what the rest of the field will be receiving in weight. Denman was fantastic defying top weight twice in this race and it would be a monumental effort to do so for a 3rd time but a horse who could get into the race proper and cause him trouble is Burton Point and even if he doesn't win, he'll collect plenty of prize money through the season. He's my dark horse for the season.

Sanctuaire could be a top hurdler to follow and should win the Greatwood on the first Sunday of the season. Check out the Morigana hurdlers from Ireland, may may wish to include either Hurricane Fly or Solwhit as well. Johnny had Solwhit last season but is leaning towards Hurricane Fly this season. Its important to have an Irish hurdler to mop up prizes this side of the Irish Sea and of course the Irish Champion Stakes. Johnny doesn't rate Sanctuaire but I believe he could be the new Celestial Halo and wouldn't be surprised to see Nicholls take him over for the big race.

When selecting your 10( we add two bonus ones in late February for the Cheltenham festival) We must look to strike a balance between Chasers and Hurdlers. 5+5 or worse 4+6 either way. Johnny Leonard argued it should be closer to 7 chasers versus 3 hurdlers as the chasers have more prizes to win.

Breeders Cup 2010

When most think of Kentucky, they see a Colonel and a secret spices chicken. They see Zinger burgers, Twisty wraps and family buckets. I'm hungry just thinking about it. KFC is one of those things that look better than they actually are. Once presented with it in bucketform, it never quite lives up to expectations. Will this week's Breeders Cup be likewise?

For the last two seasons, Europe has enjoyed more success than ever before off the turf on the artificial pro ride surface. Kentucky is back to the dirt and it seems Europe has resigned itself with mopping up the turf races. Many Americans will be happy, they are back to their traditional surface. Racing on pro ride would be akin to us running the Arc on Pro Ride but then again, it's a fair surface and I think it should be embraced world wide or at least tapeta shout

Enough chat, give me winners

Ok looking at the races, our two big winners would appear to be Workforce in the Turf & Goldikova in the Mile and I expect one of those at least to get beat from a bookies point of view and will be encouraging Mulholland's to go biggest on the double. Why? Workforce has complained about the trip over, well not the horse per se, more Michael Stoute and and more grips about the ground will have instilled market weakness. Stoute though is prone to putting punters away and even said Workforce was doubtful in the Arc. Winning the Derby, Arc and Breeders Cup Turf in one season would normally automatically confirm him a wonder horse but their seems to be huge apathy out there for Workforce after superstar Sea the Stars last season. No arc winner has ever won a breeders Cup event but the problem is who can beat him? Behkabad has shown his limitations beaten 4th in a messy Arc but I was seriously underwhelmed by his trial run as well. Dangerous Midge and Al Khali look nothing special while Debussy and Winchester could both prove the dangers. I'd expect Debussy to win as he clearly enjoys the other side of the Atlantic as he has shown winning the Arlington Million and has the right draw.

Goldikova has beaten all that has been put in front of her and really has nothing left to prove. She won by the minimum margin last season in this race but won nevertheless. Paco Boy won't Richard Hughes in the saddle but their is a home horse been completely overlooked this side of the pond. Sidney Candy, at 10/1 is an each way steal and judging by his running action and style, the draw can be overcome.

Of the other races, I can't see past Midday and make her the bet of the meeting in the 10:50 Friday( Filly & Mares Turf). She has been exceptional this season and while some may say she's had an easy few races with Sariska parking her bum in the stalls, she is a previous winner and it's her ideal trip and ground should be no problem.

A few foreign raiders will look to capture the Juvenile Fillies Turf race(8:50 Friday) but nothing jumps off the page. Together has had plenty of runs already and her second to White Moonstone would read best but the ground is a big worry. I'd give it a miss altogether.

I'm shocked the Europeans have not targeted the Breeders Cup Sprint Turf and perhaps am surprised further that California Flag is such a big price. He was sent off favourite earlier in the year in Meydan coming 3rd but has shown flashes of super stardom and worth a nibble at a big price.

Precision Break if it handles the dirt would have a smashing chance in the Marathon and again worth a go at the minimum bet.

In the big race, I cannot get away from Zenyatta. She was awesome last season and yes I know she's all about Californian pro ride type surfaces but this is a poor renewal with only one superstar present at over 9/4. Don't think, just back and back early as the price will tumble. 19 out of 19 wins makes her an all time great and those who doubt her ability to win on the dirt should note that her widest margin wins have been on this surface. Last season her last to first was epic but she'll need to race handier than that on this surface but what can beat her?

X factor: Week Two preview

Well last week I tipped up WKD orY2P or whatever they were bloody called to win the whole show and they got dumped out in the first round so I clearly have a talent for picking losers. I should have switched allegiance to Mary once we got the Pankhurst and the right to vote.

I could make a load of excuses about FYD's elimination but let's be fair, they may have been unlucky to go out in round one but they clearly were not good enough to win. Their rendition of I want to be a Billionaire may as well of been sang by Simon Cowell himself, currently worth $260 million, with people now able to download the songs every week, he can cream all his contestants before throwing them on the scrapheap, he'll reach his target in no time. Even Tesco are getting in on the act, cheering on Mary while advertising themselves behind the biggest brand that is the X Factor.

Mary blew away the opposition and did it with a supposed throat infection. Can she win it? We will be seriously out of pocket if she does as we are refunding all losing outright bets placed for the month of October in all our John Mulholland stores if Mary wins, so if you back Aidan to win and Mary wins, fear not, We'll give you your money back.

Who Will be eliminated this week?
There could be 2 eliminated this week again so if backing on the 3rd elimination market it will be the person who finishes last in the phone vote. That actually makes it easier as we just have to find the least popular contestant in the market.

Rumours of John Adeleye and Wagner getting into a full blown fit in the house has got the gossip columns flowing and both are high in the betting to hit the road this week. S too is last weeks survivor Kate Waisell. One big disadvantage and I'd blame FYD's early exit on it was playing first. Last weeks show was over 2 hours long and playing first is a serious disadvantage. 4 our of the last 6 series, the person who sang first ended up in bottom 2 in the first show. It still effects results throughout the series so if you happen to find out the running order, let me know please.

I'm going for John Adeleye myself as I can see a bounce for Katie after last week's show and if it is indeed a Madonna week she has to survive as will Wagner and Diva Fever who have a fan base to keep them safe for now.
